Vincera,
Inc., an Austin-based company, provides software that allows
their clients to protect, track and manage the distribution
of content that contains personally identifiable information
(PII) in a process Vincera labels "intelligent protection."
How can
you improve the protection and management of distributed PI?
Answer:
VAM! Intelligent Protection™ (VIP)
Why is intelligent
protection an important issue for providers of digital content?
Providers
of PII and PHI are increasingly becoming more liable for breaches
in the security of distributed data. In the name of privacy,
United States federal and state governmental bodies are continuing
to place the legal responsibility for personal information (PI)
security squarely on the shoulders of information aggregators
and providers including CRAs, Database Search Engines and Drug
Screeners. By enabling the intelligent protection of PI, PI
distributors can improve their PI distribution process and open
new revenue streams by passing on the same data security to
their customers - the requestors of PI (such as Human Resource
and Security departments).
What happens when PII or PHI is distributed without intelligent
protection?
Without
the technological means to protect and manage the electronic
distribution of sensitive information, most personal information
that is distributed outside a corporate firewall is subject
to the whims of its recipients. For instance, sensitive employment
background reports or drug screen results sent electronically
can easily be redistributed in an unauthorized manner simply
because the person or the results may be amusing or provocative.
Such incidents are not only potentially costly to the original
buyer, but to the distributor as well. Without VIP, PI security
breaches typically go unknown and the extent of any breach may
never be fully understood.
What are some of the advantages of VAM Intelligent Protection™
(VIP)?
- VIP
enables the intelligent protection of PII and PHI that is
distributed electronically over the Internet as a web page
or PDF file.
- Based
on PII and/or PHI recipient activity, VIP monitors and measures
sensitive content usage and distribution and reports these
metrics back to the content provider.
- VIP
is always active and tracking usage with or without an Internet
connection.
- VIP travels
with the PI, activates upon any attempt to access the content,
acts in accordance with the business rules applied, a.k.a.
Business Friendly Distribution™, and reports usage activity
from known end-users and, more importantly, unknown users.
- An awareness
of unknown users enables management of the PII and/or PHI
content based on the appropriate business response.
- In instances
when a security breach is detected, VIP can be used to turn
off the original source document and any copies that are part
of the breach.
- VIP
enables PI providers, aggregators and recipients to maintain
control over sensitive content distribution by applying the
right Customer Touch to the right users at the right time.
